As with Thurston, every library in Suffolk has a Friends Group (also known as a Member Group). The Group is made up of volunteers who are passionate about their local library and Suffolk Libraries.
Friends Groups work with local library staff to identify ways in which they can help to improve the library and the services it provides. Over the years, Friends Groups have held all sorts of fundraising events, activities and initiatives, the profits from which have been used to fund a vast array of improvements.
Each Friends Group is a small independent charity with members who run activities, often supported by a wider group of volunteers. Groups are always looking for new volunteers to help them. It’s very rewarding and people of all ages are welcome. That is certainly true for Thurston!
So, the day-to-day role of a Friends Group is helping and supporting their local library.
Groups also play a key function in the way that Suffolk Libraries itself operates: the Board of Suffolk Libraries is elected from the Friends Groups, by the Friends Groups. The Board is responsible for overseeing the work of the Suffolk Libraries.
In recent years, many Friends Groups have also become increasingly involved in supporting initiatives that raise money for Suffolk Libraries centrally, in addition to supporting their local library, for example on Suffolk Libraries Day.
When is Suffolk Libraries Day?
